What's the difference?

Advantage (Part C) is a private plan that replaces Medicare — often $0 premium, but with networks and prior authorizations. Medigap supplements Original Medicare — higher premium, but almost any doctor and no surprises.

Which is 'better'?

For healthy retirees who value low monthly cost and don't mind networks — Advantage. For retirees who want predictable costs, freedom to see any Medicare provider, and travel — Original + Medigap.

Can I switch later?

Advantage to Original + Medigap: yes, but Medigap insurers can underwrite you and deny coverage (except during your initial 6-month window at 65). This is the trap.

What about drug coverage?

Most Advantage plans include Part D. With Original + Medigap, you buy Part D separately.

Does it matter if I travel?

Yes. Original + Medigap works with any Medicare-accepting provider nationwide. Most Advantage plans have geographic networks.

What most people regret

Choosing Advantage at 65 for the low premium, then getting sick at 72 and finding they can't switch to Medigap without medical underwriting.

Ebby's takeaway

The healthiest year of your Medicare life is the best year to buy Medigap. Once you have a diagnosis, options shrink.
