Miss a window and pay a penalty for life. This is the calendar.
Initial Enrollment Period
7 months surrounding your 65th birthday — 3 months before, birthday month, 3 months after. My birthday month: ______. My IEP window: ______ to ______.
Still working past 65?
If your employer has 20+ employees, you can typically delay Part B without penalty. Get a written confirmation from HR that your coverage is 'creditable.' Keep it forever.
Special Enrollment Period
When employer coverage ends: 8 months to enroll in Part B without penalty. Employer COBRA coverage does NOT count as creditable — do not rely on it.
Part D creditable coverage
If you don't enroll in Part D at 65 AND don't have 'creditable' prescription coverage, the penalty is 1% per month for life. Verify creditability in writing.
Annual Open Enrollment
Every year, Oct 15 – Dec 7: switch plans, change from Advantage back to Original + Medigap (subject to underwriting), or add/drop Part D.
Medicare has no forgiveness for missed dates. Circle them on the calendar and enroll on time — every time.
